Redefining Culture

Your original essay involved coming up with a complex definition of culture and then applying that definition. I want you now to revise your definition. You have learned more aspects about human beings: you've learned about their physical evolution and about the changes that agriculture brought about. I want you to write two paragraphs, one for each question below, in which you answer the question and then explain how your answer will revise your definition of culture which you submitted in your first assignment.

The Long Foreground: Human Prehistory

   1. Discuss at length how the long period of maturation which human offspring go through affects human life. In what ways could that physical features of our species have influenced the way we live together as human beings? From this evidence, go back to your definition of human culture and construct a working definition of what culture based on the the physical characteristics and development of human beings. In this part of your essay, give specific examples from the modern culture around you.

The Agricultural Revolution

   2. What are the motives for conflict in hunting and gathering societies? What are the motives for conflict in agricultural societies? Account for the differences and describe the implications for the subsequent development of human culture. How would you redefine your notion of culture? In your discussion of the implications of the motives for conflict in both hunting and gathering and agricultural societies, discuss the nature of conflict in your own culture and which of these two cultural systems you think modern conflict seems to derive from.
