The European Middle Ages

Medieval Multiculturalism   The European Middle Ages as a historical period was largely about the transformation of a multicultural Europe into a monocultural Europe; you could say that the Middle Ages was about "the discovery of Europe."
At the start of the Middle Ages, European life was divided among several different ethnic groups. Some saw their cultural identity as imitating or extending the classical world. Some, however, resisted any classical influence on their culture and doggedly attempted to retain a distinct cultural identity.
While the discovery and imposition of a larger, European culture had several aspects, the dominant force in imposing a common culture on the various ethnic groups was religion, in particular, Christianity.
In the previous written assignment, I had you translate Christianity into Chinese in order to show how this religion and world view was substantially changed by its translation into another culture. The same thing occurred in the European middle ages as this new religion imposed on a diversity of ethnic groups gradually changed as it was translated into the cultural systems of these varios ethnic groups.

The Assignment   This is a research assignment. I want you to discover a text by any one of the ethnic groups of the early middle ages and discuss how that culture might transform Christianity. You can pick from any of the following ethnic groups:

Celts

Anglo-Saxons

Norse

You are then to find a short primary text by any of these groups and read it. You can find that primary text in the library or in the reader that is on-line. You should preferably pick a story or a myth.
Your paper will try to explain what you think the world view of that ethnic group is based on the reading that you did. You will then compare that world view to foundational Christianity and then explain how the ethnic group you're dealing with would transform the meaning and purpose of foundational Christianity.
