Critiquing Your Research

Library Project   The purpose of the library assignment is to write your own textbook for the course on a subject your textbook has decided to ignore. So you will be writing the textbook for your fellow classmates on the topics below; your classmates will be required to read your work and the information you provide will be covered in a a class quiz, so keep all this in mind as you write out your library assignments. You will be going to the library and tracking down some source other than an encyclopedia on the topic assigned below, and then composing a one or two paragraph essay on the topic and then mailing your assignment to me via these pages.

The assignment is due before the class that covers the unit right before the unit dealing with traditional African culture. Your two to three paragraph essay must include a reference to the library source you used, but the bulk of your essay should concentrate on specific information you've taken from that source rather than a a general review or summary of that entire source. In other words, if you use a book, concentrate on a single chapter from that book rather than summing up the entire book.

Grading   This essay is about one thing: researching a topic in order to teach the rest of the class in a joint effort about a single subject in as thorough a way as possible. Collectively, the entire group must produce an account of their research that adequately teaches the rest of the class at a freshman level about North American Native Americans. This work, then, has two areas on which you'll be graded. The first is on the quality of your research. Read the guidelines in the "Critiquing Your Research" learning skills. The second will be on the quality of the information and its presentation. That information has to be general enough to be suitable for a college level course but it can't be so general that you're not really teaching the rest of the class. The presentation of the information will be based on how well you present important information in relationship to less important information as well as thesis and organization.

Learning Skills   Attached to this assignment are two learning skills modules on critiquing your own research and using a library. You may want to read over the material in putting together your essay.
