2. This entire discussion is derived ultimately from Plato's Republic and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Both Plato and Aristotle list five types of government: Monarchy (rule by a king), Tyranny (rule by a single dictator; Greek: tyrannos ), Aristocracy (rule by the best people; Greek: aristos , "the best"), Oligarchy (rule by the few), Democracy (rule by the people; Greek, demos , "the people"). Both Plato and Aristotle disapproved of democracy; unlike Calvin, they saw tyranny as the form of government which naturally develops from a democracy.
